Business and Computers


Graduation Requirement:

- One (1) credit in Practical Arts (technology) or .5 credit in Practical Arts and .5 credit in Fine Arts or one (1) credit in Fine Arts.

The Business and Computer Department seeks to develop those skills necessary for the student to fulfill all academic requirements in the areas of word processing, desktop publishing, programming, and business applications. The major philosophy of the La Salle business and technology education program is to provide the students with a sound economic understanding and to enable them to acquire business skills for personal and professional use.

Accounting is an essential aspect of every business institution and organization. As future workers, owners, and entrepreneurs, this course will give the student an understanding of the basic accounting principles. This knowledge will help the students make better future economic decisions that will impact their lives and economic futures.

This course will help students understand various management theories, basic management functions and their interrelationships. Students will recognize the importance of technology and information management in the decision-making process.

Like entrepreneurs and successful business managers, students will learn that the ability to discern and respond quickly to changing economic conditions and new business opportunities is crucial to remaining viable in the marketplace.

Pre-requisite(s): Grade of “C” or better in Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry (if applicable) is required.

The personal finance course will provide a student with a view into almost all of the many different financial transactions and decisions that a person makes in their lifetime. Not only will the particular decision be examined, but also how to plan and anticipate for a person’s financial future. Buying a home, a car, insurance, and to planning for retirement and the knowledge of the securities markets that is required, are covered in this course.

This course is meant to introduce students to the care and uses of microcomputers and to give them an opportunity for as much hands-on experience as possible. The content includes: computer components and terminology, computer capabilities and limitations, computer uses in various fields. Topics include the demonstration and utilization of software programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel spreadsheet. This course satisfies the computer literacy requirements.

This course, though an elective, is meant to continue the content area of Computer Applications I, giving more opportunity for as much hands-on experience as possible.

The content includes: Microsoft PowerPoint, Access (the database), Internet usage and desktop publishing. This course satisfies the computer literacy requirement.

The purpose of this course is to enable students to plan, develop, and publish well-designed web sites that combine effective navigation with appropriate use of graphs, test, color, and sound. The content shall include, but not be limited to, the following: ethical and social implications of Internet use; web site organization and topology; client and user needs; visual organizers and web site planning; writing, testing, and debugging code; interactivity and dynamic content; web site management.

The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to computer programming using the language Java. The content will include: programming methodology, applications, development and the writing of computer programs. This course is an independent study on-line course.

The purpose of this course is to develop the competencies essential to marketing. These competencies include human relations, employability, communication, math, and economic skills. The fundamental of marketing and selling are also included.
