Fine Arts


Graduation Requirement:

- One (1) credit in Fine Arts or .5 credit In fine arts and .5 credit in Practical Arts (computers).
- La Salle High School offers Art, Acting, Music, Chorus and appreciation for all of the arts as they parallel the history of humankind.

The Arts are an integral part of a well-rounded academic program. La Salle High School offers Art, Acting and Chorus to foster a sense of aesthetics, creativity, individual expression and music appreciation.

This course presents an overview of art as a human activity with contemporary references. The class will include the development of a personal sketchbook and projects which will help the student to learn and implement the elements and principles of art. These activities will be designed to acquaint the student with countless materials, and techniques in the process of art making.

This course provides an introduction to the forms and methods of creating sculpture. The course provides the student with a sense of concept, design and craftsmanship inherent in successful three-dimensional works of art. Plaster, wire, modular components and recycled materials are emphasized. The students will be required to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through hands-on activities, oral and written testing.

This class is designed to further improve the student’s skills in drawing from observation. These skills will then translate into the beginnings of composition in painting as well as color theory and technique. The student will be expected to demonstrate both knowledge and understanding of terminology and process.

The AP class in drawing moves well beyond basic skills and exercises to explore a broader scope of drawing that would incorporate other media and new ideas. The student will be given the opportunity to move from observation to abstraction, from mimetic to inventiveness and to determine a direction for their personal ideas. The student will learn the importance and value of the process that precedes the finished work and to prepare their portfolio for presentation to the College Board. (11 th and 12 grade ONLY)

This class will give the student the opportunity to create functional and nonfunctional clay pieces. The student will become familiar with the terminology, tools, equipment and materials involved in this process. Reference to the history of this age-old activity will be enhanced with modern and personal applications of hand-building, glazing and kiln firing.

This second semester art studio will give senior students the opportunity to explore ideas and areas of interest discovered in previous art classes. The activities will include but not be limited to: clay, collage, painting, drawing, and printmaking. This course may contain a “Teaching Assistant” component. Utilizing Alias Maya 7.0 and Adobe Photoshop CS students will learn all aspects of modeling and animation from pre-production to post-production. Modeling, lighting, texturing, animating and rendering will be covered as well as the concepts of storyboarding, conceptual art and camera placement.

The students will be requiredto produce a final animation reel as individuals and as a group. Students will learn what it is like to develop they’re own storyline and animation while understanding what it feels like to work as a group in a professional environment. At the end of the course, the class will have produced a 5-10 minute group animation that will be entered in local and state film festivals.

The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop skills in graphic design. Students learn lettering, layout, and design to create images and products that reflect knowledge of the elements of art and principles of design. The purpose of this course is to provide a broad overview of theater arts. History, traditions, and operations of theater will be covered. Beginning acting experiences, which include pantomime, improvisation and scene study will be explored. Aspects of technical theater such as lighting, costume, make-up and set design will be introduced. The students will be given the opportunity to appreciate and enjoy the tradition of live theatre.

The purpose of this course is to exhibit the ability to apply television skills in the planning, directing, and recording of television programs, demonstrate the ability to write script and dialogue for a television program, and demonstrate the ability to produce a television program. Television II students will be assigned a Television Production I student and a part of their grade will depend on their ability to mentor the Television Production I student in the daily broadcast and assigned projects. The purpose of this course is to give the students an introduction to the comprehension and understanding of quality, concentration, and breathe of broadcasting. The content should include but not be limited to: introduction to the development of a video portfolio; understanding of how the behavior and opinions of society are influences through the various forms of electronic technologies; production of persuasive use of camera, editing, sound and lighting to influence the mood or outcome of an event; understand criteria in evaluating technical and artistic qualities in video essays, news reports, documentaries, etc. Special Note: Hands-on activities are integral to this course.
