Theology


Graduation Requirement:

- Four (4) years of theology.

The Theology Department of La Salle High School is a ministry which contributes to the total mission of the Church: to continue the mission of Jesus, which is to bring about God’s Kingdom. Therefore, it seeks to foster the life of faith within the entire school community through the ministries of word, worship and service. This will be done by means of evangelization and catechesis, community, liturgy, service and transformation of society.

The purpose of this course is to develop knowledge and skills that promote positive social and emotional interactions and relationships. The content should include, but not be limited to the following: a basic study of the Catholic faith including in-depth study of basic human needs, self-awareness and acceptance, family, peer, and social relationships, dealing with family problems. Students will also be required to fulfill at least twenty (20) hours in an approved service project.

The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the Hebrew Scriptures as a historical document and literary record of the history and culture of the Jewish people. Specific content will include, but not limited to, maps and time-spatial relationships, the Jewish heritage, the Exodus-Sanai-Covenant experience, the Monarchy, and an overview of the subsequent historical events which have affected their development. Students will be required to fulfill at least twenty (20) hours in an approved service project.

The purpose of this course is to acquire a basic understanding of the Bible as an historical document through an overview of significant events that have affected the people of the New Testament. The content should include, but not be limited to the following: maps and spatial relationships, the process of canonization of the Bible, the role of the Bible as an historical document, archaeological evidence and Biblical studies, the sequence of development of the early Church, survey of the Epistles from both an historical and literary perspective, the different versions of the Bible. Students will be required to fulfill at least twenty (20) hours in an approved service project.

The purpose of this course is to acquire a basic understanding of the Sacraments of the Catholic Church. This survey will include both an historical and a theological foundation to increase an understanding of God’s living presence within the Church today.

This course guides the in the process of strengthening fundamental human and Christian values and forming convictions that serve as a basis for moral decision-making. Throughout the course, students will deal with real life issues and situations. The course is intended to foster the formation of a Gospel mentality that leads to Christian vision of life that govern our everyday relationships with God, self, others, and earth. Students will be required to fulfill at least twenty (20) hours in an approved service project.

The purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of the way people in different cultures satisfy their spiritual needs. Students understand the place of religion in culture, the importance that has been attached to religion in peoples’ lives and the relationship between religion and other social institutions.

The content should include, but not be limited to, sources of religion, basis for peoples’ religious beliefs, major living religious traditions and practices, such as Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Shintoism and Taoism. Students will be required to fulfill at least twenty (20) hours in an approved service project.

This course seeks to examine current issues of personal and world concern in the light of Sacred Scripture, Christian tradition and thought throughout the history of the Roman Catholic Church. It also seeks to elicit a critical thinking approach toward life in today’s society.

The content should include, but not be limited to a recognizing of the need for a critical plan and action toward life in today’s society. This would include the following: growth in an awareness of our God-given dignity and the Church’s prophetic role in fostering world justice and peace; growth in responding to the prophetic call; awareness of the courses of social injustice and developing a basic understanding of the requirements for human action resulting from Christian belief in the dignity of the human person

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an in-depth study of key issues related to public affairs. The content should include, but not be limited to, the following: the role and scope of government; the environment; discrimination and affirmative action; public and private partnerships.

Students will participate in a simulation designed to familiarize them with the range of government services available locally and in a research project that is designed to solve a social problem. Laboratory activities should be an integral part of this course.

Peer counseling provides an understanding of the components of personal development and facilitates personal, group growth and fulfillment through individual and group processes. Specific content shall include, but not be limited to, such topics as knowledge of self and others, decision-making, problem solving techniques, family relationships, peer pressure, individual responsibility, goal setting (long and short range), and the development of a positive attitude toward self, school, and community. Group presentations “out-reach”, “teen teaching”, and specialized seminars are an integral part of this course. Students will be required to fulfill at least twenty (20) hours in an approved service project. Completion of these hours is a requirement for Graduation.

Pre-requisite(s): Peer Counseling I

This course builds on skills and knowledge gained in Peer Ministry I (although not required to take Peer Ministry I). Peer Ministry II seeks to discover and develop the means by which an individual can come to experience God on a deeper level. To facilitate this process, educational objectives will inform on prayer techniques, Church doctrine, Church history (especially in regards to historical figures) and Scripture. In particular, an emphasis will be placed on the role and gifts of the Holy Spirit. From this point, students will be provided opportunities to witness to Jesus Christ based on their experiences of this God who is love. Students will be required to fulfill at least twenty (20) hours in an approved service project. Completion of these hours is a requirement for Graduation.
