World Languages


Graduation Requirement:

  • Two (2) consecutive years in the same language.
  • Placement - Students are placed in the language of their choice on the basis of a written exam and oral interview.
  • Spanish Advanced Placement Exams:
A.P. Spanish Language - Students from the Spanish III/IVH and Spanish Speakers II/III are encouraged to take this exam A.P. Spanish Literature-Spanish Heritage III Honors is considered a Pre-A.P. Literature course. Students take the A.P. Spanish Literature exam following successful completion of A.P. Spanish Literature.
The World Language Department of La Salle High School recognizes the importance of second language competence in enhancing the student’s ability to function more effectively in the global community of the 21st century. The Department provides a comprehensive program that motivates the students to develop fluency in the language of their choice. Our program incorporates the latest trends in modern language education, and is in agreement with the National Goals for Foreign Languages and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

Pre-requisite(s): None

Spanish as a foreign language is only for English-speaking students. The Spanish I course contains the basis of language acquisition which are presented to the student through thematic vocabulary and conversational patterns in cultural contexts, with corresponding grammar support in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, together with a number of proficiency activities that enable the student to express himself or herself orally and in writing.

Pre-requisite: Completion of Spanish I as a year course with a passing grade or Spanish Placement Exam of 21-30 points plus oral interview and writing sample.

At the second level, the goal for the student is to focus on accurate mastery of conversational phrases, structures and vocabulary. Students are given opportunities to express themselves creatively with the language they have learned. At this level, students progress from “sentence-level” to “paragraph-level” conversations.

Pre-requisite: Successful completion of Spanish II as a year course or Spanish Placement Exam of 31-40 points plus oral interview and writing sample.

As students make progress in the study of their foreign language choice, they learn to engage in longer conversations, read and interpret more challenging text and understand films and videos, and write with more precision. At the same time, the students have the opportunity to learn about history, art, music, and social concerns of the country.

Pre-requisite: Completion of Spanish II as a yearly course with “B+” or higher in level II. Recommendation of the teacher is also required.

An Honors course is conducted at a faster speed and is more challenging for the student in the areas of reading and writing.

Pre-requisite: Completion of Spanish III as a yearly course or Spanish Placement Exam of 41-49 points plus oral interview and writing sample.

This course helps the students attain linguistic proficiency by offering a comprehensive review and systematic expansion of the basic structures of Spanish, while providing numerous opportunities for students to develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills and their cultural competency.

Pre-requisite: Completion of Spanish III as a yearly course with “B+” or higher in level III. Recommendation of the teacher is also required.

At this level, the student is able to communicate in a variety of topics with greater accuracy. Extensive practice is given in order for the student to become proficient in all language skills according to the ACTFL guidelines.

Pre-requisite: Placement Exam Score of 50 - 79 points plus oral interview and writing sample.

This course has been designed for the native speaker of Spanish who still needs to develop proficiency in reading and writing. At this level, the student learns to recognize the importance of the Spanish language and culture through a variety of topics that connect the student to his/her heritage, and by focusing on oral and written activities that develop the student’s ability to think critically.

Pre-requisite: Completion of Spanish Speakers I with a passing grade, or Placement Exam Score of 80-89 points.

In this course the student will reinforce previously acquired skills in Spanish through a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. At this level, there is an emphasis on reading and writing activities and a cultural survey of the Spanish-speaking world. The student will be able to maintain a conversation in Spanish with less interference from English or another language. Written essays and oral presentations will provide the context for practice of acquired vocabulary and grammar.

Pre-requisite: Completion of Spanish Speakers II with a passing a grade or Placement Exam Score of 90-100 points plus oral interview and writing sample.

This course will develop advanced listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. It is an introduction to the study of Latin American history, society, and literature. It includes cultural awareness as well as preparation for future courses in advanced Spanish levels.

 

Course Number: 0709320 SPANISH FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS III HONORS

Pre-requisite: A “B+” or higher in Spanish Speaker II and teacher recommendation.

This course will develop advanced language and literary analysis skills. It is an introduction to Spanish and Spanish American literature. It includes a panoramic view of historic events in Spain and Hispanic America, as well as characteristics of artistic movements from XII century to XIX century. It also features analysis of texts belonging to these periods.

Pre-requisite: A “B+” or higher in Spanish Speakers III Honors or equivalent Exam. Teacher recommendation is also required.

This course expands on the skills previously acquired by the student in Spanish Speakers III Honors. This course includes the second half of the 19th century and the 20th century of Spanish and Latin American literature. The deep study of these periods in literature will help the students understand the styles and views of the writers. The writing part of this course provides the students with the opportunity of expanding and refining their writing skills and prepares them to take the advanced placement exam.

Italian as a foreign language is only for English-speaking students. This course offers a functional introduction to Italian language and culture through culturally thematic approach, authentic context, and emphasis on the four skills, combined with clear presentations of basic grammar.

Pre-requisite(s): Completion of Italian I as a year course with passing grade or Italian Placement Exam of 31-40 points plus oral interview and writing sample.

Italian II integrates and recycles the major vocabulary and grammatical structures of the preceding level with a stronger emphasis on skill development. This course features a stronger focus on vocabulary acquisition, contextualization in activities, and encourages creative language use.
