Spanish as a foreign language is only for English-speaking students. The Spanish I course contains the basis of language acquisition which are presented to the student through thematic vocabulary and conversational patterns in cultural contexts, with corresponding grammar support in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, together with a number of proficiency activities that enable the student to express himself or herself orally and in writing.

Pre-requisite: Completion of Spanish I as a year course with a passing grade or Spanish Placement Exam of 21-30 points plus oral interview and writing sample.
At the second level, the goal for the student is to focus on accurate mastery of conversational phrases, structures and vocabulary. Students are given opportunities to express themselves creatively with the language they have learned. At this level, students progress from “sentence-level” to “paragraph-level” conversations.

At the same time, the students have the opportunity to learn about history, art, music, and social concerns of the country.

At this level, the student is able to communicate in a variety of topics with greater accuracy. Extensive practice is given in order for the student to become proficient in all language skills according to the ACTFL guidelines.

This course has been designed for the native speaker of Spanish who still needs to develop proficiency in reading and writing. At this level, the student learns to recognize the importance of the Spanish language and culture through a variety of topics that connect the student to his/her heritage, and by focusing on oral and written activities that develop the student’s ability to think critically.

Pre-requisite: Completion of Spanish Speakers I with a passing grade, or Placement Exam Score of 80-89 points.
In this course the student will reinforce previously acquired skills in Spanish through a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. At this level, there is an emphasis on reading and writing activities and a cultural survey of the Spanish-speaking world. The student will be able to maintain a conversation in Spanish with less interference from English or another language. Written essays and oral presentations will provide the context for practice of acquired vocabulary and grammar.

This course will develop advanced listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. It is an introduction to the study of Latin American history, society, and literature. It includes cultural awareness as well as preparation for future courses in advanced Spanish levels.

This course will develop advanced language and literary analysis skills. It is an introduction to Spanish and Spanish American literature. It includes a panoramic view of historic events in Spain and Hispanic America, as well as characteristics of artistic movements from XII century to XIX century. It also features analysis of texts belonging to these periods.

Pre-requisite: A “B+” or higher in Spanish Speakers III Honors or equivalent Exam. Teacher recommendation is also required.
This course expands on the skills previously acquired by the student in Spanish Speakers III Honors. This course includes the second half of the 19th century and the 20th century of Spanish and Latin American literature. The deep study of these periods in literature will help the students understand the styles and views of the writers. The writing part of this course provides the students with the opportunity of expanding and refining their writing skills and prepares them to take the advanced placement exam.
